Blaine County - Adam Billmayer

I have started seeding. Mother Nature is being cantankerous! Wind driven spring showers that don’t mount to much.
As I was seeding on Friday (4/25) in the windy, dusty conditions...I had a lot of questions running through my head; Is this really worthy of all the hassle? Are we going have enough moisture to get things germinated? Is it going to be another drought? As I was thinking all these negative thoughts I glanced up and there it was. A silhouette of a cross right in front of me on the side of our grain elevator. Instant relief to my mind and heart. As I turned to go back down the field I said a few prayers and thanked God! That cross stayed up there for 3 hours or so that afternoon! Faith, Hope and Love!

Moisture conditions have been fair. We have received 0 -.20 inches of precipitation in places within that last week.

I have started seeding but still haven’t been able to seed more due to rain. Two inches in the last week in two separate storms. Just been taking care of cows calving. The moisture is extremely welcome; wish we had a little more farming done, but nothing one can do about the weather. The winter wheat should really take off and start growing once it warms up. Neighbors up the road got five inches in a couple of hours and it appeared that that may have done more harm than good.
Moisture conditions have been good.

This past week was pretty productive and we have only a few days left of seeding. We were rained out Sunday (4/28) night with a quarter inch of rain. When the seeding is done we will start spraying the winter wheat. It looks good and is catching up to normal growth.

Winter wheat is loving this weather! Rooting down. We have had a very dry April. Luckily it has not been a hot April. NWS says that April and May are 2 of 4 most critical months of the year for annuals and perennials. A dry April and May, June can not get caught back up. Montana is a cool season climate for plants. (The other 2 most important moisture months are September and October--for the perennials. We had a dry October 2024.) My poor price canary in the coal mine is still in a very heavy molt. With US ending wheat stocks growing to the current projected 840 mil bushel, price will remain depressed. Low prices ruin supply--at some point--just like high prices ruin demand--at some point. But I see in today's (4/29) news there has been a trade agreement with India. India is one of the highest, if not the highest, tariff countries. India has the largest lentil consuming population. Montana is the largest lentil producing state. India imports lentils on a variable year to year basis depending local production and puts a high tariff on lentil imports on a good production year. Let's see what this trade agreement has in it for Montana's lentils. As you know, there are a lot of spring wheat acres seeded to lentils and other pulse crops this year. Hope everyone is getting spring work completed. The Great Falls car show Saturday (May 3) should be a good break from spring work. Go roam the Chrome!
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have received a few showers; less than .15 inches all total at the max within the last week for precipitation.
The weather concern is the lack of spring moisture. Being an early spring, the weather could be setting us up for a dry summer. Dry summers are usually a hot summer.

If the old addage is true, there won’t be much for May flowers in these parts. We wrapped up seeding yesterday evening, and tomorrow wraps up April. We finished the month with a total of 4/10 of rain, which came by way of small showers for the most part. Sure feels like we’ve gone a whole month with nothing substantial. Soil moisture conditions are good, but this pattern we seem to be in with rain orders already being canceled makes one a bit nervous. But we march forward. We have a little urea to put out yet, but waiting on rain, or at least something in the forecast. The weeds have started to bolt so we started on chemfallow and plan to get into spraying the winter wheat by end of the week or beginning of next week. Finally a few warmer nights and days has things starting to grow. Actually had to bust out the mower the other night and knock down a few spots. We had a nice day of weather the other day and then we got to pay for it with numerous days of wind. Just spring time on the prairie I suppose. Markets are down—really down—and the bugs are already showing up. A little rain would boost the spirit!
Moisture conditions have been good.
Always worried we won’t get rain.

Mixed bag of weather with wind again being consistent. Made a mad dash to Billings for Kenidee’s graduation then back home to finish the mustard planting. Onto spring wheat now and questioning my judgement with current market and extremely overpriced inputs. This farming game is brutal when the brain is trapped in the glass cage of emotions within the confines of a tractor cab for hours questioning your decisions. Last night (4/29) had a rain storm hit as I was folding the booms in on the sprayer so once again my timing is spot on. Glad for the quick shot of moisture though. Hoping everyone gets their drill across the finish line.

Finished seeding barley on Sunday (4/28) just ahead of the supposed showers, rain or snow. The ground so far is a little dry for seeding, just a little pickup on the packers. Getting tired of the constant wind and cold temps. Then it will be on to the 110 acres of SW and then to the 160 acres of alfalfa. Moisture has been hit or miss and mostly miss. WW is starting to grow and will look for weeds to spray this week. Hay still moving, and some have turned the cattle out to very little grass.
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have note received any precipitation within the last week.
Wondering when the big rain is coming and hoping it is state wide!

About 1/3 of the way seeded. Been a little slow as I have been waiting on some volunteer wheat and wild oats to have enough growth to spray out as these acres are transitioning to barley. Finished spraying yesterday (4/29). My earlier seeded ground has germinated and is a day or so from emergence. Neighboring early seeded ground has emerged. The grass is greening as is the winter wheat but it needs a drink soon. Soil moisture is ample for getting the seed out of the ground but drying fast. Having trouble with some water wells with water tables dropping fast lately.
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have received .09 inches of precipitation within the last week.
It has been very cool to cold for growth promotion with it starting to moderate as the weather systems blow over without depositing any meaningful moisture.

Carter County - Michael Hansen

Haven’t made much progress since last weeks submission in the farming world. Tried to start on Monday but was still to wet from the last weeks rain. Got ten feet into the field and plugged three runs with mud. The gumbo just isn’t drying out or warming up very fast. That’s ok I guess bears the alternative, but I did have a neighbor say that it’s staying just wet enough to not get any farming done but not wet enough to do lots of good. Anyway just because there was no farming to do didn’t mean there was nothing to be done. Emptied out the feedlot of the tasting steers. They are loving the green grass and big pastures. Mended on some fences and checked cows that are calving. Sounds like another couple days of rain this week. The hay barley that I got seeded is looking really good probably better than the winter wheat as of now. I guess I did resurrect the old toolbar to try and smooth out a hayfield that I broke up last year and it worked up pretty nice.

Planting completed Saturday (4/19). First time in my memory (albeit rather short) that we have finished before Easter.
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have received .1 inches of precipitation within the last week.

A concern of mine is we continue to be in a dry pattern. While it's not critical yet, we would certaibly like to see a good soaker!

Wrapping up seeding peas and then will have a handful of days of lentil seeding. We have been getting lots of small showers and snow flurries, none of which are adding up to much moisture, but between that and the wind and hard freezes most nights it’s been tricky getting any spraying done. Wheat continues to chug along, with the thin spots filling in with late emerging plants or regrowth after being nipped by old man winter. Grass is greening up but everything just feels slow.
Moisture conditions have been good. We have received .15 inches of precipitation within the last week.
It’s been too cold, needs to quit freezing hard at night, and even though we have adequate soil moisture for now, we could use a shot of rain to bring the spring crop and spruce up the wheat. It’s always slightly concerning when mud season isn’t very muddy.

Done seeding spring wheat. Put in only a percent of normal due to price and input costs. The cheapest crop this year may be chemfallow. Not much marketing option either. Even with Price Risk crop insurance, spring wheat price set at $6.55, at 75% insurance level, that in reality equates to $4.91/bushel. Checking hay land moisture, it just isn't there. My soils professor told us that the very best soil is 50% dirt, 25% water, 25% air. With the snow and ice this winter, our soil surface appeared to be snow/ice packed. That put a crust on the surface and lowered the air %. I see weatherman Eric Snodgrass is predicting a hotter and drier than normal summer for us. As far as the winter wheat, we have some that needs to be sprayed, but with freezing almost every night, we have to wait.  Our soil warmed to the mid and upper 40s, cooled to the 30s, warmed last week to the 50s, and now is back to the low 40s. Not the best germination temperature. But it will change. With Earth Day on Tuesday (4/22), I was surprised to learn that in the US wheat industry, only 250,000 producers and processers make it all happen. Hope everyone has a good week!
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have received .25 inches in 3 different snow squalls.

Between wind, rain, sleet, cold, wind, and hail our progress hasn’t been what we would like but we are marching forward most days. Did I forget to mention it’s been windy? Well it’s been windy. Pretty good moisture in the chemfallow. The heavy ground is almost too wet and the sand is on the drier side. Overall it’s great seeding conditions. Winter wheat is looking really good and we have 75% of it top dressed, so now it needs a good inch or two of rain. Lots of potential there. We had lots of dirt work to do before we started and we were waiting on ground to warm up, so we got a bit later start than we would normally.
Always concerned about drought.
Moisture conditions have been good. We have recevied a few spits and flurriesor precipitation within the last week.

It’s been a potluck of weather around these parts. Rain, snow, sleet, hail, cold temps and winds, did I miss anything...?...wait wind can’t forget the wind. Finished with our lentils and have moved into yellow mustard. Still have some custom fertilizing work to wrap up for a neighbor and will have to take a couple days off this weekend for my daughter Kenidee’s graduation at Rocky. Will be planting on the May side of the calendar it looks like and hoping June will be less heat and more rain. Winter wheat is enjoying the sunshine when it gets it and a bit peaked looking in the mornings with these cool temps. Wishing everyone the best of luck this spring and may the breakdowns be cheap!

We have not started seeding. Spring work is going slowly and still waiting for the weeds to all get out of the ground. Got all the WW top dressed before last weeks snow storm. Received 0.20 inches last week. Will start spraying some fields Tuesday and then get hooked up to the drill and start seeding a small amount of SW and then to the barley...or might switch crops, not made up my mind yet. There is about 12 to 15 inches of soil moisture so far but dry further down; have to worry about that, but hopefully mother nature will deliver more rain and NO MORE SNOW. Best to all.
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have received .12 inches of precipitation within the last week.

Spring work has been moving along well. Should be about 1/2 done seeding by the weekend. Most producers just beginning in the county. Delayed by cool temps and recent moisture. Durum peas and lentils going in. No winter wheat. All spring crops.
Moisture conditions have been good. We have received .25-.50 inches of precipitation within the last week.
No weather concerns at this time. Surface moisture looks good so far. Subsoil lacking. Winter annuals and volunteer cereals starting as far as weeds are concerned.

Seeding malt barley has begun for me. A lot of neighbor acres have been planted over the last couple weeks. It has been rather cool yet with a bunch of snow squalls so crop growth rates have been hindered. I am waiting on last years wheat acres to get some volunteer growth worthy of spraying out along with the wild oats, which has been like watching paint dry. This is all irrigated acres going into barley and i don't need wheat in it. When it warms up, the sprayer will be included in rotation of field equipment. There seems to be a sufficient amount of soil moisture to get the crop started.
Moisture conditions have been good. We have received .14 inches of precipitation within the last week.
It has been rather cold with persistent squalls of very little moisture. Weeds are wild oats, volunteer wheat, and prickly lettuce.

Started seeding hay barley on the 27th of March. Got a few fields done and then it rained and snowed for several days. Then it was ten degrees at night for almost a week and then it warmed up again and so I started again on the ninth of April. Finished seeding the hay barley on the 11th of April. The very first hay barley that was seeded is just now poking out of the ground which might be a sign that the ground is a little cold that down here in the gumbo. Switched drill over to seed feed barley and we got 3/4 of an inch of rain on the 12th. So it will be a few days before we get started again. Old cows are moved to the calving pastures still waiting on the first babies to arrive. Heifers are all done calving; went pretty good only lost one calf out of 220. Grass is kind of trying to green up and grow hopefully it will get with it so the yearlings can be turned out soon and we can stop the chore of feeding them breakfast.
Moisture conditions have been fair.
A concern of mine is that we have been receiving too much wind.

We have started seeding. Going a little slow because we’re having some issues getting through the stubble of a record wheat crop. Had to stop early today (4/16) because the pea stubble picked up enough humidity over night that it won’t feed through the drills this morning. We’ll have to wait for it to dry before we can finish this field.
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have not received any precipitation within the last week.
A concern of mine is that the moisture is good for seeding but we’ll need some more when the seeds are in the ground.

We have started seeding. Frogs are croaking and yellow bells are up which means it’s finally spring! Started putting peas in the ground Wednesday the 9th. Conditions are borderline too wet due to cool soil temps, but our heavy clay soil tends not to do much drying this time of the year so mud it in and pray for more rain (or snow). Haven’t had more than two days in a row between rain and snow showers, so off to a slow start, but nearing a third of the way done. Winter wheat is starting to really shape up. Early seeded is stooling out and looking good other than the odd gravelly hilltop that blew clear this winter, late seeded is two leaf stage, and rowing up better everyday.
Hoping we can shift out of this cool pattern and get a sustained warm up, would be great to start receiving our moisture in the form of rain instead of snow but all in all conditions are good if we can just stay in the storm track this growing season.
No insects at present but am finding grasshopper eggs and cutworm pupae, so will have to be prepared. It has been too cold to see any new weed growth outside of any winter annuals that escaped last fall’s burndown so fields are looking very clean still as far as weeds go.

Just started seeding spring wheat today, Tuesday (4/16). Would have liked to started sooner, but the waiting line at both area seed plants was 8 days. Soil temperature is over 50 degrees. Good seeding conditions. Finished top dressing winter wheat the last week of March.  Winter wheat is loving this weather even with the light frosts. Putting on a new leaf every few days. My price canary in the coal mine is still in a heavy molt. Over 800 million bushels of carry out is not good for the market. Needs to be under 500 million bushels. Hope every one has a Happy Easter. Which by the way, should be the 13th. The first full moon after the Equinox was the 12th.
Moisture conditions have been good. Two snow and rain storms this month.  About 1/3 inch each.
It is an early spring even with a later Easter. The antelope are having their young 3 weeks early and the Sage Grouse are on the stomping grounds a couple of weeks early. Hope this is not the first signs of a hot dry spring and summer.

We have not started seeding yet. Been busy getting equipment ready, cleaning and treating seed, top dressing, and driving a little too close to standing water in the sprayer. Have been waiting for warmer soil temps and the wind to quit blowing to put the drill in the field. Had a real run on heavy winds last week which dampened the mood. Winter wheat came through winter very good, probably one of the better stands we’ve had in the last 10 years, and it’s starting to green up nicely. If we can put together some timely moisture this season, it has a lot of potential. Received .20-.25 inches of rain/snow yesterday which was very welcomed—haven’t had much of any moisture all spring.
Moisture conditions have been fair.
Still dry in my area west of the highway and south of Hobson. North of Hobson and east of HWY 191 have had good moisture. Will have to have a lot more moisture in the upcoming months.

We have started seeding and things have been cold, windy and dry till today (4/16). Started planting chickpeas on the 11th and now fifty percent completed on our lentil acres. Receiving decent moisture today and is wonderful to have a rain delay. Winter wheat has been slow in this area to green up due to cold temps and limited hours of daily sunshine. Wind has kept sprayer pinned down and drill is usually caught up to it most days. Planting conditions are excellent in the fallow and recrop with typical average conditions. Everyone stay safe and enjoy the moisture!
Moisture conditions have been fair. We have not received any precipitation with that last week.

We have not started seeding. Slow to limited describes field work so far. It is getting old going out and looking at the fields to see more weeds still coming out of the ground. With the cold nights and warm days ground temps are a little low. Grain still coming into the elevators, hay still moving down the highway, top dressing is in full swing. A little spring seeding has taken place in the area, seems like everyone is waiting. I am waiting for the storm that is suppose to come Thursday and then will spray and start seeding myself. Best to all.

Just getting started with seeding and spring work. Seeding durum on last years lentil ground. Going good. Also seeded lentils in durum stubble. Finished that and moving on to green peas. Running two drills; one for durum and one for pulse crops. Once pulses are done, both will work in the durum. Received .75” on Sunday. Should get back at it Wednesday or Thursday.
Moisture conditions have been good.

We have not started seeding. Machinery is all dressed for the dance. I have been waiting for a little warmer soil temps and for some volunteer wheat and wild oats to get big enough to spray out before seeding. Water supply for irrigation is looking to be a little scant again this year as far as the snow pack is concerned. Hopefully some of these storms bring us some much needed moisture as the drought maps are starting to expand the territory included in elevated stages of drought. The grad student, along with some other students, doing some irrigation research in one of my fields were out to install instruments last week. We could only push a probe into the ground about 18". This equates to about 3" of available moisture, which is about 50% of a full profile. They had good exercise digging their holes 3' deep.
We will concentrate on getting rolling this next week, weather permitting.
